What You Should Know About Anxiety

Last week, I encouraged you to stop being anxious and fearful.  I’m sure that I left you with a few questions, so this week, I am going to tell you a few things you need to know about anxiety.

IFT what do i need to know about anxiety.fw

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a state of mind were a person is concerned about something or someone.  It has various ranges.  “It can go from genuine concern…

For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state.  ~Philippians 2:20

So I am all the more anxious to send him back to you, for I know you will be glad to see him, and then I will not be so worried about you.   ~Philippians 2:28

And, apart from other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for all the churches.  ~2 Corinthians 11:28

to obsessions that originate from a distorted perspective of life.”(source The Master Study Bible)

For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? “Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? “And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life? “And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. “But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith! “Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ “For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.  ~Matthew 6:25-34

but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.  ~Mark 4:19

Now, as you read this next passage, it will look very similar to the one that you just read.  However, I want you to pay attention to some key things that Jesus said…He mentioned a few key points that are important for us to notice.

And He said to His disciples, “For this reason I say to you, do not worry about your life, as to what you will eat; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. “For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. “Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap; they have no storeroom nor barn, and yet God feeds them; how much more valuable you are than the birds! “And which of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life’s span? “If then you cannot do even a very little thing, why do you worry about other matters? “Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; but I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. “But if God so clothes the grass in the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you? You men of little faith! “And do not seek what you will eat and what you will drink, and do not keep worrying.“For all these things the nations of the world eagerly seek; but your Father knows that you need these things. “But seek His kingdom, and these things will be added to you.  “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom.  ~Luke 12:22-31

How does anxiety sound, look, and feel?

The psalmist were great with expressing themselves.  Through their thorough descriptions of life, we are able to look back  on the experiences that they had and become informed on various aspects of life.  Anxiety is no different topic than any other that we experience.  They also felt anxiety and were very descriptive about how if affected them.

Who rises up for me against the wicked? Who stands up for me against evildoers.  ~ Psalm 94:16

I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all day long.  ~Psalm 38:6

Are you able to see what anxiety feels like?  Is it similar to how you feel when you are anxious?

Anxiety can be prohibited

Did you know that God has told us not to be anxious?

Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.  ~Matthew 6:34

Be anxious for nothing, but in all things by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let you requests be made known to God…  ~Philippians 4:8

And do not seek what you should eat or drink, nor have an anxious mind.  Luke 12:29

Do you see that God has told us, clearly, not to be anxious?

Anxiety can be prevented.

Now, we have already seen that God has told us not to be anxious, but it often doesn’t feel that easy.  In fact, it can feel down right impossible.  Let’s look at what the Word of God says about preventing anxiety

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.  ~Matthew 6:33

Everything that you are worried about will be taken care of if you seek first, the kingdom of God.

Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, but a good word makes it glad.  Proverbs 12:25

Focusing on the wrong things will cause you to be anxious.  Remember, anxiety is a state of mind.  Therefore, you have to change your mind.  Get a good word in you. Read the Bible.  Listen to and read things that are positive.  Talk to people who encourage you.

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.  ~Philippians 4:8

You can overcome anxiety

Yes! It is true.  You can overcome anxiety!

Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.  ~1 Peter 5:7

Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved  ~Psalm 55:22

Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.  ~Psalm 23:4

When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.  ~Psalm 94: 19

You are able to overcome anxiety though your faith in God.  You are able to overcome anxiety when He is your source of comfort.  You are able to overcome anxiety when you realize that He will take care of you because He is God and He loves you.

I hope the you have found encouragement in this today.  Trust God and walk in faith, free from anxiety.  Remember no one who puts their faith in God shall ever be put to shame. (Romans 10:11)
